Katarina Witt

  

German figure skater Katarina Witt was a former skater. Witt, who was twice an Olympic champion is widely recognized as one of the most outstanding women's singles figure skaters. According to her Laureus profile, "she is most remembered for her athleticism , charismatic charm on the skating rink."



 



 Witt took home her first Olympic gold medal for East Germany in 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. She then won another one in 1988 at the Calgary Olympics. She is one of two skaters in the world to defend an individual ladies' Olympic title, the second being Norwegian Sonja Henie. Witt is an all-time World Champion (1985, 1987 1988, 1987,) as well as twice the World silver medalist (1982 and 1986). She won six consecutive European Championships (1983-1988), which is the only feat equal to Sonja Henie among female skaters. Witt was among the best figure skaters between 1984 and 1988. She was awarded ten gold medals at eleven major international events.
